The review meeting on the implementation steps of the Msimbazi Basin Development Project continued today, August 14, 2024, at the Serengeti Hall in Dar es Salaam. The meeting focused on discussing the best way to proceed with the project’s implementation in order to meet the scheduled timeline and fully achieve the project’s goals.

The main goal of the Msimbazi Basin Development Project is to address flooding and enhance urban planning and development in the lower area of the Msimbazi Basin, which holds significant economic potential due to its central location within the city.

The President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (OR-TAMISEMI) through TARURA is the main implementer of the project, in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam City Council for all project activities, except for the construction of the Jangwani Bridge, which will be built by TANROADS. The project implementation period is six (6) years, from 2022 to 2028.

The tasks to be implemented in the project include:

  • Compensation payment to residents
  • Construction of infrastructure
  • Construction of a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) depot
  • Construction of a modern bridge in Magomeni (400m)
  • Expansion and construction of Msimbazi River banks
  • Construction of a market
  • Solid waste management
  • Construction of a city park and development of residential and commercial areas
  • Preparation of a land use plan
  • Restoration of livelihoods
  • Basin management

The process of compensating the project-affected individuals has been carried out with great care. As of August 12, 2024, a total of 64.9 billion shillings has been paid as compensation for property to 2,533 affected individuals, 8.1 billion shillings has been paid for alternative land for 2,042 affected individuals, and 30.7 million shillings has been paid as rent and transportation allowances for tenants.
