Dar es Salaam, March 25, 2024 – Engineer Humphrey Kanyenye, Coordinator of Cooperation Projects between the World Bank and TARURA, disclosed today that the official commencement of a major project is scheduled for April 12, 2024. This initiative will impact 2,155 individuals who have already received compensation.

Speaking to journalists at the project offices located in Millenium Tower-Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam, Engineer Kanyenye underscored the contractual obligation for compensation recipients to transfer their property and evacuate the project area within six weeks of receiving funds in their accounts.

“All beneficiaries were provided with a special contractual agreement mandating their relocation within six weeks of fund disbursement,” remarked Engineer Kanyenye. “As this stipulated timeframe has lapsed, beneficiaries are urged to adhere to the directive to ensure the timely execution of the project.”

The delay in project implementation was attributed to affording affected individuals an opportunity to voluntarily dismantle structures to salvage personal belongings. Out of the 2,329 individuals initially listed for compensation, 2,151 victims have already received a total compensation amounting to 52.6 billion shillings, as of March 21, 2024.

However, Engineer Kanyenye noted that 466 individuals were not accounted for during the initial valuation process, due to reasons such as boycotts or absence from designated areas. These individuals have been incorporated into the second register, which has been finalized and is slated for submission to the Chief Government Appraiser for approval on March 26, 2024, ensuring their inclusion in the compensation process.

The impending project implementation signals a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to address the needs of affected individuals and advance regional development initiatives.
